BSES Namibia 2012 |
In July 2012, I completed my Namibia Expedition. This was a momentous moment in my life and one that I will never forget. It was divided roughly up into three phases: The Canyons to Coast Trek, Ugab Canyon Trek and the Brandberg Rock Art Phase.
Canyons to Coast Trek
Essentially this entailed crossing on foot the whole of the true Namib Desert from east to west at this latitude. This was the main adventure phase of the trip and was around 120km in total. Originally intended to follow the Ugab Canyon in its entirety, due to anticipated logistical difficulties, this was eventually routed to cross the high gravel desert from Numas to the kopjes of Taffelkop and hence on to the lower Ugab before crossing the arid coastal plain to the bleak forbidding shores of the Skeleton Coast at the "Winston Wreck" just to the south of the Ugab estuary. This was my proudest moment as I never would have believed that I could walk 120km across a desert, but I did!
Ugab Canyon Trek
This was what we referred to as the 'Wetland Phase'. This was where we walked 20km from the Numas across to the mid Ugab Canyon. We saw some fantastic wildlife, such as a herd of Zebra, a gang of Meerkats and a herd of Elephants!
Brandberg Rock Art/Basecamp
I documented multiple paintings in the Numas valley, some of which were up to 3000 years old. We took photographs and GPS locations for these undocumented pieces of art.
We set up camera traps and we managed to catch pictures and videos of leopards prowling around near us, we also caught baboons on camera.
